How to create an effective "About me" page: 5 things to know

You remember ? This is the page you had so much trouble writing! Often not knowing what to say when it comes to us, or what to put that would be likely to interest our audience ...

But you knew that the About page was usually the most visited page of a site after the home? (Take a look at your Google Analytics stats to check it;))

And you know why it's been so complicated? Because we often take examples of what others do.

And we end up putting some sandwiches on how awesome we are and our team. All in a surge of ego oversized, which will undoubtedly leave indifferent your reader.

Basically, you are screaming how you are GE-NIAUX, offering products just as GE-NIAUX as you. While your visitor is saying, "Ok, if there is someone who could solve my problem?"

Put your ideal customer in the heart of your "About" page, not you

As we have already mentioned several times, your "ideal client" must be at the heart of your site, articles of your blog, your social networks, in short of ALL your communication. If your reader has reached this page about, it's probably that what you presented him on your home he liked and he would like to have a little more information about you.

But what kind of info?
The ones he needs to trust you.

Your visitor has only one question in mind:
What can this person or company do for me?

What can she do to solve my X problem?
You will have understood it, your visitor does not care if you have the most brilliant team of the world, if you offer the best products of the world, if they are of quality (one assumes that yes ....) And that your service is for you (oddly) in fact !!

What your reader wants to know is if you or your team, your products / services can improve their life on a particular aspect. Your customer is thinking of IT, not your products or services.

So it's not that you should not talk about the qualities of your business, but just change the perspective of what you have written or are writing.

Emphasizing:
• The problems your business will solve for your reader
• The benefits of your products and / or services (and NOT their features)

In short, all those things that really interest your ideal client in the situation in which he is.

There is no standard "About" page or magic formula. However, there are a few tips that will help you improve or create this important page of your site. And it is crucial to linger a little.

Ready ? Let's go !

5 Tips for Creating an Effective About Page

1. If you have a story to tell, tell it here!

Behind many activities, there are stories (fascinating or not). If you have one, exploit it! We stayed great kids, we love stories.

That's what we remember. Really, there are stories that sell and allow you to connect with your reader who will feel identified by your story, your values etc ...
In short, make him feel that you are part of the same tribe as him!

But if you want to tell it, the page "About" is the page indicated. Forget, for a moment, the sale of your product or service, and think about how you managed to create your business (which is already a very beautiful story in itself), how you formed your team and so on.

2. Use a direct and personal style

Here comes the emotional factor. When you visit a website with a touch of humor, do not you feel it closer to you? Do not you feel that the people behind this site will better understand your needs?

Although we have always been taught that, to appear professional, it was necessary to use a cold and informal tone, this technique today can no longer convince. Write to your ideal client as if you were writing to a friend (while remaining professional of course).

3. Insert a picture of yourself or your teamWhy should you hide?

Putting a (pretty) picture of yourself or your team creates a feeling of closeness. Provided of course it is warm, you smile and it makes you want to work with you! And above all that gives confidence.

Once again, while always remaining professional, know how to stay simple. We do not necessarily ask the picture of the employee of the month in a suit tie!

4. Avoid at all costs snapshots and ready-made formulas

- If you have doubts about certain words or phrases, eliminate them! For example, the word "strive", "mission", "vision", "values" ... in short, the blah you will find on all other sites.

- Do not go from "About me" to "About us". At first, we often tend to want to look bigger than we really are. But there is nothing wrong with telling who is really behind this site and not pretending to be a multinational when this is not the case!

- Stay simple on the title of this page in your menu. Once again, your surfer is in a hurry. The golden rule on the Internet: make it easy. Do not change his habits, his references, and do not go out if possible from the usual "About".

Your reader is not there to decipher anything, he just wants to know if behind this page is actually hiding your "About" page. Be creative about other aspects, but not about the title of your page!

5. (Re) check the elements to integrate on your "About" page

• Do you answer the 6 questions any journalist asks to describe a fact? What, Who, Where, When, How, Why

• Add testimonials or logos from some of your clients, links to press articles or other articles on which you are mentioned, accreditations, prices ... In short, all the elements that will help reassure your reader by the "social proof" (one of the 3 elements of the principle of persuasion ).

• Structure your page. The surfer scans, he does not read. Use titles, subtitles, bold, bullets to make this page fun for your reader.

NB This is valid for any page of your site, or any of your communications, emailings, blog posts etc.

• Do not forget to  add your conversion form  (newsletter subscription, contact ...). This is a good opportunity to convert a visitor into a prospect;)

To sum up this already (too) long article, if you only had to remember 2 things, it would be:

- If there is a page for which you can (and should) give free rein to your creativity and imagination, this is it. Do not try to model what is usually done, or what your competitors are doing. Be different!

- Avoid at all costs arrogance. Your reader is not looking for a superhero, just someone who could solve his problem.

If your "About" page is interesting, catchy and directed towards YOUR READER, you will have 70% of possibilities in addition to converting it into a customer!
